From beginner to heavies, everyone rolled through to rip around and hang out. It was chill & fun. A mask-less breath of fresh air, and we needed it. Big thanks to everyone involved and HUGE thanks to Olga Aguilar for documenting the occasion!
Japanese riders dropped jaws in the 2020 (21) Olympics with Sakura Yosozumi taking the gold so we’re keeping an eye on her and teammate Mami Tezuka, who has been showing off her inner hesh all over the US since then at backyard pools and gnarly DIYs spots. The creativity and skill of Bryce Wettstein, who recently went pro for Stereo, is always a joy to see, as are the classic stylings of Minna Stess, who recently turned 16.
Lots of dudes dressed up as construction workers, because they didn’t plan a costume and really ARE construction workers. Pretty genius because they can just sleep in their clothes.
Make the quest out to this Montana skate mecca, and if you can, catch a session with the Girls on Shred. Find more info on their instagram account @girlsonshred!
The weather report was sketchy but in the end, the clouds parted making way for a super sweet skate clinic featuring legendary shredders, ambitious beginners and a whole lot of great people behind the scene working for the future of non-trad skateboarding. It got wild, it got weird- it was fucking wonderful. This wasn’t just a contest, it was a renegade mission by local FDR women to take over the park for a day of music, art and skateboarding. The “Gnar Bar” was constructed on site, and the whole back flow bowl was painted with wild-ass ponies and flaming rainbows. Nine bands performed and there were over 30 artists and vendors. Women and queer/non-binary skaters from all over the country came out and shredded.
A killer crew of girls from Portland and Washington gathered together in late June (safely distanced with face masks on hand) and hopped on the ferry in Anacortes to float northwest through the beautiful San Juan Islands. Arrival at the Scott Stamnes skatepark kicked off a full weekend of gnar; grinds, slashes and stylin’ airs.
ROLL WITH US was held on June 21st in Seattle. The event consisted primarily of skateboarders but included any wheeled ally- rollerskaters & bladers, bicycles, longboarders- could literally “roll with us!”
The purpose of this peaceful rally was to take a stand against police brutality. The rally started at the Carl Anderson Tennis courts now part of the C.H.O.P area in Capitol Hill and ended at the Jose Rizal Bridge approximately 1.5 miles south. Once reaching the final destination all wheeled friends chanted against police brutality and for Black Lives Matter.
I have always felt a great kinship with Celina Meehan because once, before we knew each other, I leant her my ID to get into a bar in Seattle. Neither of us remembered until we met a second time a few years later and put it together. There is an old legend that says if someone successfully uses your ID to get into a bar, it means you are forever linked as “Sisters of Libation”.
