Arays Domech had her crew name all picked out and knew there was a need for an organization in South Florida to give girls and LGBTQIA+ folks a safe place to skate. Still, it wasn’t until a broken wrist kept her off her board that she had the free time to put the pieces together and Skate Nymphs was born. With lots of help from friends to organize meetups and get the word out, Skate Nymphs is now hosting regular events, including a Spring Skate Jam March 20 from 2-6pm with free entry at Skate Bird in Miami.
Crew name: Skate Nymphs
City or region? Miami, FL
What do you do? I host girls’ and LGBTQIA+ skate meetups/ safe spaces, helping marginalized people connect and do something they love around others they are comfortable with.
Where do you meet? Various parks around South Florida.
How did you start? I started this organization with the help of some friends in the summer of 2021. I always had in mind how there aren’t any girls and LGBTQIA+ skate organizations in South Florida and how I should start one. I never really had the time to set anything up until the universe turned my dreams into a reality: I ended up breaking my wrist while skating which gave me a lot of time. I have a group of friends who help me with the meetups, just supporting to get as many people out there as possible, and it has helped incredibly. With the right support system and time anything is possible.
Can you share a story or favorite moment from a meetup? One of my favorite moments from a meetup would be when I finally landed a kickflip and I had everybody around me supporting me. It was such a magical and beautiful moment.
