Skate shops create skateboard communities. They are a crucial aspect to how this whole world functions. The skate shop is where may of us make our first connection with skateboarding, get our first setup and meet skate buddies that become lifelong friends. For lots of kids, the shop is a sanctuary where they can go hang out without being in someone’s way, flip through a magazine or watch the latest video. And as adults, that irreplacable feeling of connection and community continues on.
Skate shops provide so much more than just retail, but like all small businesses, their existence is threatened by online sales and big corps like Amazon. Due to COVID closures and quarantines, last year posed an even bigger threat to our mom and pops. Deluxe recognizes the importance of these shops in our communities, so last year they deemed February 19th “Skate Shop Day.” Now everyone is rising to the challenge- DC shoes announced this morning that they were suspending all online skate shoe sales today. We will see how other large companies take this opportunity to show love to the little guys. Because skate shops deserve a day dedicated to recognition and rallied support.
