The final Combi Bowl Bash took place last weekend, marking the end of an era for this iconic skate spot. My first visit to the Combi was in the early 2000s when legends like Mimi Knoop and Cara-Beth Burnside dominated the scene. Back then, it was one of the only events that included a ladies’ division. In 2019, just before the pandemic, BIGFOOT was soft-launched at the Combi Pool Party.
Fast forward to today, and the women’s competition has become a major highlight, drawing elite-level talent and interest. The progress these skaters have made in recent years is remarkable. I’ve lost count of how many male friends and colleagues now say, “Women are the future of skateboarding.”
Although it’s sad to say goodbye to such a legendary venue, it’s clear that this is just the beginning for these talented skaters.
Special thanks to Monique O’Toole for capturing so many unforgettable moments along the way.
